چکیده
Assessing the extent to which glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are increasing in frequency modern times and whether their incidence is driven by anthropogenic climate change requires historical context. However, progress on this issue hampered incomplete GLOF inventories, especially remote mountain regions. Here, we exploit high-resolution, multi-temporal satellite aerial imagery, documentary data identify events across glacierized Cordilleras of Peru Bolivia, using a set diagnostic geomorphic features. A total 160 GLOFs from 151 individual sites characterised analysed, tripling number previously reported events. We provide statistics location, magnitude, timing characteristics these with implications for regional hazard identification assessment. Furthermore, describe several cases detail document wide range process chains associated Andean GLOFs. • Our inventory consists (GLOFs). About two thirds have not been identified literature. analyze spatial temporal patterns occurrence. characterize pre-conditions, triggers mechanisms

Evaluations for Potential of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (glofs) in the Bhutan Himalaya Using Prism and Avnir-2 Onboard Alos
The objectives of this study are to validate generated Digital Surface Models (DSMs) by PRISM onboard the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS, nicknamed “Daichi”) in snow and glacier regions to contribute to the evaluation of potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and their mitigation in the Bhutan Himalaya. Glacial lake inventory will also be generated to investigate the expansion ...
متن کاملSolar modulation of Little Ice Age climate in the tropical Andes.
The underlying causes of late-Holocene climate variability in the tropics are incompletely understood. Here we report a 1,500-year reconstruction of climate history and glaciation in the Venezuelan Andes using lake sediments. Four glacial advances occurred between anno Domini (A.D.) 1250 and 1810, coincident with solar-activity minima. Temperature declines of -3.2 +/- 1.4 degrees C and precipit...

متن کاملThe Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age in the eastern Ecuadorian Andes
To better characterize the climate variability of the last millennium in the high Andes, we analyzed the pollen content of a 1150-yr-old sediment core collected in a bog located at 3800 m a.s.l. in the páramo in the eastern Cordillera in Ecuador. An upslope convective index based on the ratio between cloud transported pollen from the Andean forest to the bog (T) and Poaceae pollen frequencies, ...
متن کاملEarly local last glacial maximum in the tropical Andes.
The local last glacial maximum in the tropical Andes was earlier and less extensive than previously thought, based on 106 cosmogenic ages (from beryllium-10 dating) from moraines in Peru and Bolivia. Glaciers reached their greatest extent in the last glacial cycle approximately 34,000 years before the present and were retreating by approximately 21,000 years before the present, implying that tr...
